We have used life cycle analysis (LCA) to identify the lifetime environmental impacts of Ponsse products and services. The majority of emissions contributing to global warming, about 95 per cent, are produced by fuel consumption and manufacturing.

We are working continuously to reduce fuel and oil consumption. Fuel efficiency, meaning the consumption of fuel relative to the volume of wood harvested, is a key cost factor, and hence our development and research is guided by both environmental and financial factors. Thanks to our development efforts, PONSSE forest machines are compatible with renewable fuels and hydraulic oils.

During maintenance and servicing, the greatest environmental loads are the machines’ oils, spare parts, and tyres. Ponsse’s authorised aftersales service network processes all waste responsibly. We use preventive maintenance to avoid unexpected breakdowns and to make maintenance safe for workers and the environment.

PONSSE forest machines use the cut-to-length (CTL) harvesting method. The machines have been developed to fully utilise the valuable wood raw material and cause the least harm at the logging site.

The computing capacity of CTL forest machines’ measuring equipment allows the best possible value to be extracted from forests. This means more than financial gain. By optimising the yield and added value of the raw material, the maximum amount of sawn timber, which stores carbon the longest, can be produced.

CTL machines support all harvesting methods from first thinning to continuous-cover and regeneration felling. For all harvesting methods, we make sure that the forest can regenerate quickly and reliably – only the healthy growth of the next tree generation can guarantee the continuation of the forest cycle. Our machines must be balanced and strong to support different harvesting methods, allowing for the long reach necessary for thinning.

CTL harvesting keeps machine trails light. Eight-wheeled PONSSE forest machines have a balanced weight distribution, and correctly selected tracks can greatly reduce the machine’s trails. Forwarders have the greatest impact on trails because they drive over the same path multiple times. CTL harvesters typically leave branches and crowns on the trail to protect the soil from forwarders. Large load spaces also mitigate machine trails because capacious machines need to make fewer runs.
