Rome 12 July

‘A double win for the Teros and Finnish men! (Tero Pitkämäki first and Tero Järvenpää second.) A great feeling, especially since all the world’s best throwers were present in Rome. The expectations for Beijing remain high. An especially nice thing was the fact that Tero was able to rise to his own level in Rome: competing there after the accident last year was far from easy. I believe that the handbrake has now been released and the javelin will soon fly even farther,’ rejoiced coach Hannu Kangas.

Joensuu 16 July

Tero won the third Eliittikisat competition with a fine result.

He was excellent in the very first round: the javelin flew for 87.17 metres, speeded up by a reasonable tail wind. This was enough for a dominant win, since the second place went to Antti Ruuskanen with his best throw of 80.61 metres.

‘Pretty dull going after a couple of fairly exhausting training days,’ Pitkämäki coolly analysed. ‘The first one went out in a pretty good position, but the ankle of my supporting foot wasn’t as stable as it could have been,’ the reigning world champion said. He is about to reach his peak condition.

Lapinlahti 20 July

Tero won the fourth Eliittikisat competition with a result of 83.20 metres. Tero was not satisfied despite the victory: ‘As a whole, I must be worried. The javelin just won’t fly. My timing is seriously off,’ the solemn Pitkämäki admitted. ‘I let go of the javelin too soon. I should be a little more patient.’

With this win, Pitkämäki took the first position in the Eliittikisat series after Lapinlahti.
