A recovered Tero Pitkämäki wins in Brussels: "I put it all into the first throw"
Brussel 4 September 2009Tero Pitkämäki, disappointed by his results in the world championships due to illness, threw 86.23 metres in Brussels, enough throw for a clear victory. The reigning world champion, Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen, finished second, throwing 82.61 metres on his first attempt. However, Thorkildsen was forced to withdraw from the competition due to groin pain.
Tero Pitkämäki became the winner of javelin throw in the last Golden League competition this year. The victory was welcome to Pitkämäki after the his world championships effort was spoiled by the ear infection.
”I’m in surprisingly good throwing condition now. This time the wind was also quite difficult. Normally, that wind would have problems given me problems. Now I got the javelin into a good position. It was a good day,” says Pitkämäki while recalling his winning throw.
First try, best try.
”When it started to rain during the first round, I tried to make as good throw as possible on my first attempt, and it succeeded.”
Andreas Thorkildsen from Norway threw his best result, 82.61 metres, with his first throw and came in second. Vadims Vasilevskis was third with a throw of 82.42 metres. Teemu Wirkkala finished fourth with a throw of 81.61 meteres and Antti Ruuskanen sixth with 78.24.
Pitkämäki will next compete on 12–13 September in the GP finals in Thessaloniki, Greece.
