The young javelin thrower started his season in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on 9 JunePonsse and 22-year-old javelin thrower Tero Pitkämäki, who won the Finnish Championship in 2004, signed a partnership contract in 2005, which will provide noticeable long-term results for both parties.
Tero Pitkämäki is a young future hope in javelin who has quickly risen to join the Finnish javelin elite in 2004 by winning the gold medal in the Kalevan Kisat Finnish Championships in Vaasa, and by being the best placed Finnish athlete at the Olympic Games by finishing in eighth position in the javelin final. In 2004, Pitkämäki also made his way to the GP final, to which the eight best javelin throwers on the basis of the world ranking were invited. Pitkämäki clinched fifth position in the final.
On Thursday 9 June, Pitkämäki opened the 2005 season in Ostrava, Czech Republic, where he fought against his childhood idol, Jan Zelezný. The result objective for this season is clear for Pitkämäki: 87.50 metres.
Pitkämäki was 10 years old when he threw javelin for the first time. Five years later he started to compete seriously. Pitkämäki enjoys throwing and says: ”If I did not throw Javelin, I would throw discus. In my first athletics competitions I took part in every event and won the javelin, which made my event selection easy in the end.” Pitkämäki is currently studying in Vaasa to become an electrical engineer. Although his competition calendar is very tight, his studies are advancing well.
”We selected Tero Pitkämäki to join the Ponsse team in order to increase the international growth of our company and the reputation of the Ponsse brand. Pitkämäki and Ponsse share a number of qualities – Finnish nationality, long-term work and purposeful development stand out when looking back at the history of both partners. We also have the same objective: We aim at being the best in the world with the help of hard long-term work and a humble attitude,” says Arto Tiitinen, Managing Director of Ponsse Oyj.
