91.11 metres in the Eliittikisat competition in Kuortane

Tero Pitkämäki threw the national record in javelin, 91.11 metres, in Kuortane this weekend. Pitkämäki, who represents the Nurmon Urheilijat -99 club, was outstanding in the competition because the second-place finisher, Norwegian Olympic gold medallist, Andreas Thorkildsen, who only managed to throw 85.80 metres. Teemu Wirkkala representing the Toholammin Urheilijat club came in third with 82.82 metres. The world record is 91.59 metres thrown in Oslo by Thorkildsen.

Tero described his competition: ”The wind conditions varied quite a lot but mainly it was a fair side wind. It was rather hot in Kuortane and there were a good number of spectators. I wish to thank the spectators for providing support and a great atmosphere. Let’s talk about the throws: the first throw was a low one - almost like a thrust - but a good throw nevertheless. I tried too hard on my second and third throws and was not relaxed enough. The fourth throw was better but the angle of the javelin was poor. The fifth was the longest of the day and my best result thus far. The throw took off well on the support and the angle was magnificent. Once again, I tried too hard on the sixth throw and it was a hasty performance. My results were: 88.27, 84.59, 85.28, 87.16, 91.11 and 85.17."
