Tero Pitkämäki progresses convincingly towards the World Championships in Osaka
5 August 2007The climax to the closing day of the Kaleva Games was the javelin final, which Tero Pitkämäki, one of the famous athletes from Nurmo, was leading after his huge throw in the second round. The new record for the Kaleva Games now stands at 89.43 m, which is Pitkämäki’s third best result this summer and his eighth best result ever. Pitkämäki snatched victory with his second throw. His first throw carried slightly over 85 metres.
“The first two throws were good, but did not really hit the mark. After that I ran out of energy slightly,” recounted Pitkämäki of the games that brought him his fourth championship title.
Pitkämäki’s place in the final was left to the third throw of Saturday’s heat, which carried 88.67 m. The closely contested heat was reflected in the final, in which Pitkämäki sat out one round. “My body couldn’t take the competition on several days in a row, so I decided to give my body a rest,” commented Pitkämäki.
Instead of taking his last throw, Pitkämäki went to the centre of the field and bowed to the spectators in thanks for their support.
Pitkämäki took his fourth consecutive title in the javelin at the Kaleva Games. The series started in 2004.
“Of course I didn’t take winning the title as a foregone conclusion. My competitors can always come up with a surprise,” emphasised Pitkämäki.
Pitkämäki left Lappeenranta contentedly, heading towards Seinäjoki. There is one week until the Elite Games to be held in Kuortane on Sunday, Pitkämäki’s last event before the trials for the World Championships, which will be held in Osaka on 31 August.
“In Kuortane I’ll be aiming for a throw that begins with the number nine,” said Pitkämäki.
